Western Sydney’s Biggest National Park is on Its Way
Western Sydney’s outdoor scene just levelled up. Gulguer National Park has officially been announced 1,100 hectares of bushland, cliffs and river country less than an hour from the city, and it’s set to become one of the region’s best spots for hiking, mountain biking and getting off-grid without leaving Sydney.
About Gulguer National Park
Gulguer National Park sits about 5km south of Silverdale and 10km west of Bringelly. It’s formed by merging the existing Bents Basin State Conservation Area with Gulguer Nature Reserve, plus around 700 hectares of newly acquired land. That makes it more than three times the size of Centennial Parklands.
It’s the second national park delivered for the region as part of the Cumberland Plain Conservation Plan, following Warranmadhaa National Park on the Georges River. The name comes from the swirling waters of the Nepean River, which cuts through the park.
Why It’s Worth Paying Attention To
It’s positioned to link up existing conservation land into one continuous stretch running from Gulguer Nature Reserve through Bents Basin and eventually across to Burragorang State Conservation Area — a genuinely huge protected corridor on the city’s doorstep.
Can You Visit Yet?
Not the full park access but public access is currently available through Bents Basin State Conservation Area, 152 Water Street, Wallacia, which already has swimming holes, walking tracks and picnic spots and now sits inside the boundary of the new national park.
Future plans include walking and cycling tracks and campgrounds as the rest of Gulguer opens up, so this is one to bookmark if you’re into hiking, trail running or mountain biking — early access before it gets busy is prime territory.
