Explore Western Sydney Parklands
You don’t need to drive hours out of the city to find yourself surrounded by bushland, wildlife and wide open space. It’s already here, right in the heart of Western Sydney!
Western Sydney Parklands is the largest urban park in Australia, and most people who live nearby have barely scratched the surface of what’s inside. We’re talking 70km of walking, running and cycling trails spread across Blacktown, Fairfield and Liverpool, with everything from a quick 30-minute stroll to a serious 3-hour bush hike. There’s kangaroos, native birds, First Nations cultural trails, panoramic city views, picnic spots and playgrounds. It’s an all free, all accessible, and all waiting to be explored. Here’s a few of the community’s favourite tracks.
Gabrugal Yana Bushwalk
Distance: 11km loop | Time: 4 to 4.5 hours | Grade 3 — Moderate | Entry via Range Road, Cecil Park
If you only do one walk in Western Sydney Parklands, make it this one. Gabrugal Yana winds through Cumberland Plain woodland from Cecil Park to Middleton Grange along a ridgeline with views stretching out to the Blue Mountains and back toward the Sydney skyline. Indulge in a cultural experience of six hand-crafted art trees sit along the trail, each one representing a different Dharug Season and created by First Nations artists. Scan the QR codes as you go to hear the stories told in Dharug language and English. It’s the kind of walk that stays with you.
Moonrise Loop
Distance: 6.2km loop | Time: 1.5 to 2 hours | Grade 3 — Moderate | Creek precinct, Fairfield area
This is people’s most loved trail for a reason. The Moonrise Loop takes you through a mix of dirt bush tracks and open paved paths, building up to the Moonrise Lookout where you get sweeping views across the region and on a clear day, all the way to the Sydney CBD. Keep your eyes open for kangaroos grazing in the early morning and goannas sunning themselves along the track. In season, bluebells line parts of the trail. It’s genuinely beautiful!
Binyang Matta Long Track
Distance: 10.5km | Time: 2.5 to 3 hours | Grade 2-3 | Doonside/Nurragingy area
One of the longest and most varied walks in the parklands. You’ll start in the gorgeous Nurragingy Reserve before the path shifts into natural bushland, where the sound of bellbirds takes over and the suburbs feel very far away. Binyang Matta is a Dharug name meaning “Place of Birds” and the birdlife here genuinely delivers. Watch for black-shouldered kites, swift parrots and azure kingfishers darting through the trees. Deer and kangaroos have also been spotted along this route, especially in the early morning.
Pimelea Loop
Distance: 1.6km | Time: 30 minutes | Grade 1 — Easy | Pimelea precinct, near Lizard Log Playground
Short, sweet and completely doable. The Pimelea Loop connects Lizard Log and The Dairy, passing a playground, lookout points and waterways along the way. It’s the perfect warm-up walk or an easy leg-stretch before settling in for a BBQ picnic. Full facilities on-site including toilets, sheltered picnic tables and free BBQs.
Hilltop Lookout
Distance: 1.6km | Time: 30 to 45 minutes | Grade 1-2 | Near Lizard Log Park Nature Playground
A step up from the standard Pimelea Loop, this one adds an elevated lookout with open views across the district. Mostly sealed paths make it accessible for most fitness levels. All the same great facilities nearby including BBQs, sheltered picnic areas, toilets and parking.
What You Need To Know Before Your Visit:
Open seven days a week. Free parking is available at most trailheads across the parklands. Bring water on longer walks as not all trails have drinking fountains. Dogs are welcome on a lead on most tracks. And if you want to make more of your visit, the parklands regularly run free community events including nocturnal wildlife walks, guided cultural experiences and yoga in nature sessions.
