Jenolan Caves Is Back in Early 2027

After more than two and a half years locked away, Jenolan Caves is on track to reopen in early 2027. This is one of the oldest cave systems on the planet, sitting about three hours from Sydney on the western edge of the Blue Mountains. Underground rivers, crystal chambers and towering formations, plus a heritage hotel above ground. Yes, it’s worth the drive.

Jenolan Caves
Why it’s been off limits

Weather damage between 2021 and 2024 wrecked the Two Mile section of Jenolan Caves Road, shutting the road and the whole precinct in April 2024. Between fires, floods, landslides and COVID, the caves have been closed more than they’ve been open since 2020. Repairs kicked off in August 2024, and the road is being rebuilt to hold up to whatever the weather throws at it next.

Jenolan Caves
What’s changed

The downtime has been put to good use. Expect upgrades inside the show caves, a new Blue Lake Boardwalk, refreshed tracks and trails, and better parking.

The real draw for a weekend away is Caves House. The 1897 heritage hotel is getting new ensuites, air-con in the rooms and in Chisholm’s Grand Dining Room, plus new heating in guest areas. Same old-world character, minus the freezing hallways. Book a night, do the caves in the afternoon, eat in the dining room, then catch the Blue Lake early before the day-trippers arrive. Platypus sightings are a real possibility.

No date has been set. It’ll be announced once the Reserve Trust finalises operational planning, so jump on the newsletter if you want first dibs. The opening weekends will go fast.

Pack a layer, as it’s cooler underground year-round. Planning to tackle the Six Foot Track? It’s closed between Jenolan Caves House and Binda Bush Cabins until the caves reopen.
