Penrith has been home to one of Western Sydney’s finest performing arts venues since 1990 and it’s named after one of the greatest opera singers who ever lived. The Joan is the only cultural centre in the world named after Dame Joan Sutherland, Australia’s most celebrated opera diva, who performed at its very opening night. More than three decades on, it remains the creative heartbeat of Penrith and one of the most well-rounded arts venues in the region. The theatre covers live performance, music education, theatre and visual arts all under one roof. If you haven’t been, it’s worth the trip.
Theatre Features
The Joan covers everything from contemporary and classical music to drama, dance, comedy, circus and song across three distinct performance spaces. The venue boasts a 660-seat concert hall, a 380-seat drama theatre and a 100-seat multipurpose hall, alongside more than 25 purpose-built rooms for music classes.
The Joan is home to two of Western Sydney’s most respected arts organisation: Q Theatre, which has been producing professional theatre in the region for over 60 years, and the Penrith Conservatorium of Music. This means the venue runs original Australian productions and world premieres alongside touring shows, with a program that consistently champions culturally diverse and community-connected storytelling.
The Morning Melodies series is worth knowing about if you’re looking for something relaxed and affordable. Running for more than 30 years, it brings audiences together for live performances, connection and community, with complimentary morning tea from 10am followed by an 11am show featuring music, variety acts and guest artists. The Joan also runs drama classes, school holiday workshops, dance classes and music lessons throughout the year, making it as much a place for participation as it is for watching.

High Street is one of Penrith’s best dining strips. Make a night of it and book dinner before or after the show, the venue is right in the middle of everything.
Getting There
The Joan is located on High Street near Penrith City Council and Westfield, a short walk from Penrith Station via Penrith Plaza.
By car: Parking is available at Penrith Plaza (Westfield) and in the Civic Car Park adjacent to the centre, with accessible parking available in the Council car park. The Union Road public car park is also a short walk away if the closer options are full. Evening shows are generally easier for parking than daytime visits.
By train: Penrith Station is on the Main Western and Blue Mountains lines with regular services from Parramatta, Blacktown and the Sydney CBD. The walk through Westfield to the venue takes around 15 minutes.
